Baits for larger carp

Being a relative new comer to carp fishing, is there any special baits for catching larger carp other than using a larger bait on hair rigs than normal. At my local lake carp go in excess of 30lb but all I seem to be able to catch are ones to 6lb at best. I would welcome your views on this subject.
